Interview Preparation Guide
Look Sharp, Sound Smart, Get Hired—Even on Teams!
Interviews are conversations, not tests. But they still need proper prep. Whether it’s your first call or a final stage, this guide will help you come across confident, informed, and clear about your value.
1. Do More Than Read the Job Description
Most people stop at the job spec. Go further.
- Look into the company’s recent news, strategy, or funding rounds.
- Understand the team or department’s role in the wider business.
- If the company is growing, why now? If they’re hiring, what’s driving it?
The more you understand the context, the better your questions and answers will be.
2. Tell Your Story (Not Just Your CV)
Interviewers don’t need a re-run of your CV. They want to know how you think, work, and solve problems.
That’s where the STAR method comes in: Situation. Task. Action. Result.
It’s a simple way to structure your answers and stay on track. Here’s how it works:
- Situation: Set the scene (where you were working, what the context was).
- Task: What you were responsible for.
- Action: What you actually did—be specific.
- Result: What happened? Numbers help. So do outcomes.
You don’t need to follow it word for word, but it’s a great framework to have in your back pocket. To learn more about this, check out a previous blog on this.
3. Ask Better Questions
This is your chance to find out if the role is right for you.
Instead of: “What’s the company culture like?”
Try:
“Can you tell me about someone who’s really thrived in this role or team?”
Or: “What would I need to achieve in the first 6 months to be seen as successful?”
Smart questions show you’re thinking beyond just landing the job. You’re thinking about doing it well.
4. Prepare the Practical Stuff
- Check your tech: Test your camera, microphone, and internet connection ahead of time.
- Set the scene: Choose a quiet, well-lit space with a clean, clutter-free background.
- Dress the part: First impressions count—dress professionally, even for virtual interviews.
- Know your audience: Do a quick refresher on the company and the person you’re meeting.
- Revisit the job spec: Reading it again on the day keeps key points fresh in your mind.
- Have your CV handy: Whether printed or on-screen, it’s a great reference during the call.
5. Don’t Try to Be Perfect
Seriously. Nobody wants a robot. Authenticity goes further than perfection. Own your experience, be honest about what you know (and don’t), and stay curious.
